You are right about Moodle. It is an excellent online learning system and is incredibly easy to use and manage. There are very large training organisations using Moodle as their elearning system. At our training company Skillscorp, we use a hosted system which is managed for us. This is another way of having up to date content which is looked after by an external provider. Learning content needs to be engaging and even fun to use. It should include text, flash or other video, interactions etc. to truly compete with a classroom based environment and a "live" trainer.

Great observations, and good advice! And I certainly agree with working to make online video presentations a performance -- you can see how I practice this, using hands, props, and head gestures in the demo at http://www.knowledgevision.com/demonstration.

It sounds like you might have fun using KnowledgeVision on some of your advanced projects...and if you encounter something that's beyond Moodle, I'd be glad to set you up with a "sandbox" account to experiment. Feel free to get in touch with me through the KnowledgeVision website.

Best regards,

That works really nicely for your purposes in Moodle 1.9 and looks great.

I'm grappling with how to balance the scroll of death with longer form courses in Moodle 2 where one cannot link directly to uploaded files and resources.

Essentialising document information on a page in Lesson then referring readers to a file in the directory could be one way around it.

Thanks for the thought jump start. The wheels are turning...

Cheers

Your 2nd and 5th point are linked I think: Moodle, and any other LMS, is a hard nut to crack...getting the support staff, budget, resources, etc. in place beforehand help to mitigate the dangers and raise your probability of success. I'm interested to hear what, if any, plans you have for 2011 with Moodle and online learning.

Best of luck in the New Year!

Your post has inspired me to take an inventory of my top 5 mistakes of the year. These are fantastic learning experiences because you will be much more sure-footed in your decisions in 2011 with regard to online learning. My dad used to tell me that the only person who doesn't make mistakes is the person who does nothing. I totally agree! So good on you for taking on new learning, for pushing toward your goal and you were reflective enough to identify mistakes rather than glossing over them.

Must go reflect on my 2010 year...
A great post!
